…O cómo matar a un recién llegado del susto (or how to scare a newcomer to death)

El primer mes y medio en Silicon Valley pasaba por una adaptación express obligatoria de supervivencia. No se trata de besar el santo y repentinamente entender Estados Unidos.

La cosa es que ahí, entre Skype y Whatsapps españoles de “¿Qué tal va el inglés?”, heme allí acostumbrándome a mi nuevo móvil, pasando los contactos de un lado a otro, descargando otra vez las apps más relevantes, y aclarando a tu familia por cuarta vez que no llamen al español. Que la torta es descomunal.

Sola en casa. Diego trabajando. De repente…

PIPIPIPIPIPIPIPIPIPI

Comienza a sonar dentro de la casa un ruido más ensordecedor de lo habitual, similar a una alarma de incendios, pero algo menos intenso. A lo lejos atisbo mi móvil con la pantalla iluminada, pero no, no puede ser el móvil. Es demasiado.

En esos momentos de apuro en soledad es cuando el grado de estupidez personal se acrecienta, máxime cuando es la primera vez que vives fuera de tu país. Intentas mimetizarte y pensar como sus habitantes. Vale, mi primer encuentro con tecnología puntera. Seguro. Vuelvo a mirar el móvil. Sigue iluminado. “Vale, ya está. Esto es que el apartamento cuenta con un sistema de detección de humos que comunica al móvil la información”. ¡Zasca!, tu neurona chunga ha hecho de las suyas.

En ese estado de razonamiento de atontada que dura un segundo, decido rescatar mi móvil. Mi lógica aplastante no reaccionó a tiempo, que se le va a hacer, y comencé a tocar la pantalla como un chimpancé, sin percatarme de más. Nada, no paraba. Ni un botón de STOP en la pantalla que atisbe el fin del infierno.

Mientras mis dedos emborronaban la pantalla a huellas táctiles como posesa en dos segundos eternos…Solo me dio tiempo a atisbar 4 palabras reflejadas en una especie de mensaje de texto:

AMBER, ALERT, CAR, HONDA…

Raciocinio estúpido dos, con suma pánico. “¡Nuestro coche es Honda Civic! Ya está, ya sabía yo que esto de venir aquí no traería nada bueno. Igual me ha llamado la policía. Voy a llamar a Diego”. No lo pilla. A los dos minutos un breve Whatsapp.

D_ Reunión.

C_ Ah, vale. Es que me ha sonado una alarma rarísima en el móvil.

D_Aquí también. A todos de la reunión a la vez, pero ni se han inmutado. Solo han dicho…ahhh otra vez…Bueno te dejo.

C_Vale.

Al menos ya intuyo que no es algo personal…

Alertar sobre secuestros infantiles

Y he aquí la clave… Recibí mi primera ALERTA AMBER…

Se trata de un sistema que comunica cuándo un niño ha sido raptado por extraños con el fin de ser conseguir información o simplemente avisar para permanecer alerta.

Para ello siempre suelen aportar algo de información, y en este caso, se trataba de un niño raptado en un Honda del que facilitaron la matrícula y el color. Bueno, más bien se trató de un doble robo. Del coche y del niño.

Tras consultar varias veces las noticias averiguamos el percal. El padre dejó a su hijo con las puertas abiertas tan solo un momento para volver a casa en búsqueda de algo. Un ladrón aprovechó el momento y robó el coche, sin saber obviamente que iba con sorpresa.

El niño tenía problemas asmáticos, por lo que urgía localizarlos cuanto antes. Afortunadamente la historia acabó en final feliz, y localizaron el coche abandonado en un lugar visible. Ladrón, pero aún le quedaban resquicios de humanismo.

Su origen, una niña asesinada en 1996

El nombre de Amber hace homenaje a una niña asesinada en Texas en 1996. A raíz de su caso comenzó una campaña de movilización en Estados Unidos para establecer protocolos de urgencia ante raptos infantiles.

Ello derivó en lo que hoy se conoce como ALERTA AMBER, aunque obviamente la difusión llegaría inicialmente por medios más convencionales (prensa, radio, TV, señalizaciones de tráfico…) que también eran utilizados en el momento para anunciar otro tipo de alertas (inundaciones, terremotos, huracanes…). Ahora el sistema ha avanzado hasta SMS gratis en móviles, pasando por incorporarlo a aplicaciones como Google Maps.

La decisión de poner en marcha esta alerta depende por lo general de la policía estatal o de las patrullas de autopista, que establecen un protocolo previo antes de dar falsas alarmas (por ejemplo, debe tratarse de menores de 18 años, con pruebas fehacientes de que han sido raptados). Si no es seguro que se trata de un rapto, establecerán otro tipo de protocolo distinto que no es ALERTA AMBER.

Y Pedro acabó devorado

En el estado de California este tipo de alertas comenzarían a funcionar en 2001 a raíz de otro sonado caso de secuestro infantil.

Sin embargo, y a pesar de una idea de buen fondo incuestionable, son muchos los críticos por el ligero criterio de activación y la ausencia de relación vista entre el sistema de alarmas masivo y el éxito de cada caso. Y es que los detractores argumentan que se da el botón muy a la ligera (casos de adolescentes rebeldes, disputas familiares de custodias…), perdiendo un grado de credibilidad en el que el receptor frunce el ceño acompañando un gesto de …»Otra vez estos…”.

Así pasará, que cuando Pedro avise de verdad que viene el lobo, los demás estaremos repantingados en el sofá. Solo esperemos que eso no pase, y que el lobo se haga vegano, que aquí se lleva mucho.

Conectar/desconectar Alertas Amber-emergencias

Una vez lo sabes, la verdad es que te acostumbras, pero en el año que llevo aquí llevaré 3 alertas Amber, que por defecto estaban configuradas en mi móvil americano.

También hay posibilidad de configurar alertas de emergencias como inundaciones o terremotos, que tampoco está de más.

No obstante, si estás en la zona y quieres conectar/desconectar estos sistemas de alerta en Iphone, ve a configuración, notificaciones y al final del todo verás ALERTAS GUBERNAMENTALES. Conecta y desconecta como desees. Supongo que en el resto de móviles los menús serán hermanos, así que mirar en la sección de Configuración.

In those times of lonely trouble is when the degree of personal stupidity increases, especially when it is the first time you live outside your country. You try to imitate and think like its inhabitants. Okay, my first meeting with cutting-edge technology. I´m sure. I look at my cell phone again. It’s still brighting. «Okay, that’s it.  The apartment has a smoke detection system that communicates that to my cell». Bang! Your dumb neuron has had its way.

In that state of stupidity that lasts a second, I decide to rescue my cell phone. My overwhelming logic did not react in time and I began to touch the screen like a chimpanzee, without realizing too much. Nothing, it did not stop. Not a STOP button on the screen that finish the end of hell.

While my fingers smeared the screen with fingerprints as possessed simian in two eternal seconds … I only had time to peer four words reflected in a kind of text message:

AMBER, ALERT, CAR, HONDA …

Stupid reasoning two, plus panic. «Our car is Honda Civic! That’s it, I knew that coming here would bring nothing good. Maybe police called me. I’m going to call Diego. » He does not catch it. Within two minutes a brief Whatsapp.

C_  Ah okay. It’s just that I heard a very strange alarm on my cell phone.

D_ Here too. Everyone from the meeting at the same time, but none of them were surprised. They just said … ahhh again … Well I’ll leave you.

AMBERT ALERT

And here is the key … I received my first AMBER ALERT … It is a system that communicates when a child has been abducted by strangers in order to get information or simply to warn to remain alert.

They always provide some information, and in this case, it was a kid kidnapped in a Honda. They facilitated plate and color of the car. This time was a double theft. Car and child.

After checking the news several times, we found out the score. The father left his son with the doors open just a moment to go home in search of something. A thief took advantage of the moment and stole the car, obviously not knowing it contained a surprise…

The child had asthma problems, so he had to locate them as soon as possible. Fortunately the story ended in happy ending, and they located the abandoned car in a visible place. Thief, but there were still traces of humanism.

The origin of AMBER ALERT

Amber’s name pays homage to a girl murdered in Texas in 1996. Following her case began a campaign of mobilization in the United States to establish emergency protocols for child abduction. Connect / disconnect Amber-emergency alerts

Once you know this, the truth is that you get used to. In one year, at least in our area, I received 3 alerts.

There is also the possibility of setting up emergency alerts like floods or earthquakes, which is not too bad. However, if you are in the zone and want to connect / disconnect these alert systems on Iphone, go to Settings, notifications and at the end you will see GOVERNMENT ALERTS. Connect and disconnect as you wish. I guess in the rest of the mobile the menus will be more or less the same, so look in the Settings section.
