El supermercado lleva unos meses lleno de Ugly Christmas sweaters. Sí, esos suéteres feos como el demonio con los que algunos americanos se vuelven locos. Cuanto más feos, mejor. Esa es la norma.

He intentado buscar el origen de esta moda, pero la información varía. No hay nadie que quiera confirmar ser el precursor. Joderían su carrera como diseñador/a.

Unos dicen que el antecendente de los jerseys feos en general a nivel estadounidense podría ser Bill Cosby (o los diseñadores, claro). Igual algunos no recordáis su serie de los 80/90, pero por entonces sus jerseys molaban. Las cosas cambian y ahora Bill Cosby tiene doble mierda:

• Sus pleitos con la justicia por abusos
• Y ser un posible precursor de una moda basada en “A ver quién tiene el jersey más feo”

Otros dicen que también podría ser Chevy Chase con su peli “Socorro, ya es Navidad”, y cómo no, los británicos reclaman que todo se debe a Colin Firth en Bridget Jones.

Pero bueno, el caso es que en el año 2001 llega la fiebre de verdad en América con fiestas temáticas e irónicas de “a ver quién lleva el mejor jersey de Navidad”. Y los comercios están aprovechando el filón al máximo.

Todos prueban uno. Todos hacen que no lo cogen, que es una tontería. Pero al final, caen…Supongo que es mezcla de nostalgia, ganas de pasarlo bien, y que a tu abuela le guste realmente por una vez el jersey que llevas. Lo dicho, un básico en el armario.

Supermarket has been full during several months with Ugly Christmas sweaters. Yes, that ones that are ugly like hell and that are driving Americans crazy. The uglier, the better. That is the rule.

I have tried to track the origin of this trend, but information change depending on the sources. There is no one that wants to confirm themselves as the forefather. Their careers will be fucked up as designers.

Some say that the precedent of the general ugly sweaters for Americans could be Bill Cosby (or the sweater designer). Maybe you don´t remember that 80´s/ 9´s TV Serie, but in that decades that sweaters were so cool! Things change, and now Bill Cosby has double-shit to face:

• His problems with the law
• And the possibility of being the forehead of this trend based in «Who wears the ugliest sweater.»

Other ones say could be Chevy Chase and his film “National Lampoon´s Christmas Vacation ”, and of course, British claim the boom came with Colin Firth and Bridget Jones.

Anyway. The thing is that around 2001, the real fever comes to US with ironic theme parties, just to get a winner. And commercial sector took advantage to the maximum.

All people want to try. All said they don´t buy it, that is just a silly thing. But, at the end, all fall in the trap. I suppose it is a mixture among nostalgia, having fun, and that your grandma likes your sweater at least once in a year. Well, a must in your wardrobe.
